Triple Threat Weekend - Tunnels, Turbines and TaTas

Triple Threat Weekend - Tunnels, Turbines and TaTas

Over the course of 4 days in mid-October, the girls of North Texas got together to fly, jump, and raise money for breast cancer awareness. The event was called Triple Threat Weekend – standing for Tunnel, Turbines, and TaTa’s and it was an awesome success for iFLY Dallas, Skydive Dallas, and Jump for the Rose.

The weekend was kicked off with a NSL Cloud League on Thursday evening. Six experienced coaches were each given three less experienced flyers to form in to a team for the evening. Rounds were drawn and over the course of 90 minutes, each team flew a total of 15 minutes. While it was not a real competition, all the flyers remarked on how much they learn in these player-coach sessions. To make the evening extra special, 15 pizzas were generously donated by nearby restaurant Taverna Rossa so participants could save their dollars to put toward the raffle. The night finished off with a dance party at a nearby bar where a giant stuffed bear brought us all to the center of attention.

Friday night was Ladies Night at the tunnel, where only females were allowed to book within the 8 solo 10-minute sessions and 4 10-minute group flight sessions. This brought a whole new population of local women, those from the freefly side of bodyflight. From 10pm-midnight the lights were dimmed, 90s pop music pounded out of the sound system, and fruit, cheeses, and sweets donated by Corner Bakery were snacked on. When girls weren’t flying they were wearing tutu’s and when they were flying, they were smiling from ear-to-ear as the great instructors of iFLY Dallas coached them through new moves.

The weekend continued on to Skydive Dallas, where despite the bad weather 45 people showed up on Saturday evening to cook out and attend the raffle drawing. Marian Sparks, an avid skydiver, breast cancer survivor, and founder of Jump for the Rose (www.jumpfortherose.org), told her inspiring story, and by the time we drew the raffle winners, we had raised $2300 for a JFTR, a non-profit organization that raises money for the Houston-based clinic, The Rose. 40 prizes were given away and even those that did not win were given a commemorative wine glass as an appreciation for their donation.

Sunday finally brought a beautiful, sunny Fall day and girls were out in full-force to jump in their tutu’s. The camaraderie built around such a fun, themed weekend is surely here to stay as iFLY Dallas plans to bring Ladies Night to the tunnel on a monthly basis and will surely continue to support Jump for the Rose.

Huge thanks goes to: Marian Sparks, Erika Ploehn, Denise Anderson, Jackie Ellis, Veronica Guzik, Jennifer Dillon, Lizzie Holden, Bill Dawson, Preston Drake, Josh Cochran, Nick Flo, Dustin Marlatt and Dan Perry.

& to our sponsors: iFLY Dallas, Skydive Dallas, Larsen & Brusgaard, Icarus Canopies, Velocity Sports Equipment, Dave & Buster’s, Top Golf, Pole Position Raceway, Taverna Rossa, Corner Bakery Cafe, Blue Skies Mag and Holden Brand.

The IBA distinguishes between the sport of indoor skydiving (engaged in by patrons with IBA accounts seeking approval of flight skills though the IBA's Flight Progression System) and recreational flying (engaged in by entertainment customers who do not intend to pursue approval of skills). While indoor skydiving is safe for all ages, the inherent risk of the activity is necessarily greater for those engaging in the sport of indoor skydiving, particularly as they progress through more sophisticated maneuvers.
